Charleston Wedding Planner – Flipping a Wedding Venue
Holding both a wedding ceremony and reception in one location can be convenient for brides and their guests, however it can also be a unique challenge for a Charleston wedding planner to successfully coordinate “flipping” a venue. A “flip” is when the ceremony space is converted into the reception area, while guests are enjoying a cocktail hour and the wedding party is taking pictures. There are several aspects to take into consideration when flipping a room including set up, timing, staffing, venue space and guest comfort.
The most important aspect to consider is if the venue is even equipped with enough space and accommodations to allow a flip. It may not always be logistically possible to convert a standalone or single space venue. Where will the guests go while the flip is taking place? Where will tables, chairs and other reception items be stored during the ceremony? Will there be any staff to help move and setup the tables and chairs in such a small period of time? These are all very important details and some venues just do not have the space allocations or staffing to seamlessly convert.
Flipping a room takes a lot of clear communication between your Charleston wedding planner and all of your vendors. The DJ needs to set up equipment, the florist needs to arrange centerpieces and the baker needs to be able to set up the cake, ideally in spot where it will not have to be moved and risk being damaged. Having at least part of the reception set up during the ceremony can be a crucial timesaver.
Pipe and drape is perfect for this method. It can act as a beautiful backdrop to the bride when walking down the aisle at the ceremony but it can also effectively block off a portion of the room so that the reception space can already be set up away from guests’ view.

Hotels are a great example of an ideal venue to flip. They will have enough space for guests to comfortably enjoy a cocktail hour and a place where escort cards or a seating chart may be posted to save time. They should have staff members who are experienced in flipping rooms, making the labor and setup time more manageable for the Charleston wedding planner and vendors.
Charleston Wedding Planner Tanis Jackson recommended the Francis Marion Hotel because of their staff and experience of flipping a ceremony and reception.
When executed correctly, guests will be surprised and impressed when entering the reception after the flip. With the proper preparation and coordination between the venue, vendors and Charleston wedding planner, doing a flip can add a dynamic experience and whimsical atmosphere to the wedding.
