On August 18, 2011 I received a call from a bride’s saying “There is an uninvited guest coming to my wedding and her name is Hurricane Irene”. I had never experienced this before with a Charleston wedding. After two days of attemworking on a Plan B that did not involve extra expenses, I decided the only option was to offer the bride my home for her wedding.
What to do if a hurricane is headed to your Charleston wedding?
We went with the following arrangements: The dining room for food setup, the man-cave for reception seating for the elderly, the sunroom for the DJ, and the great room for the ceremony with 150 guests. We setup a tent in the backyard for dancing. We put down a row of seating for family and I found my emergency aisle runner so guests would leave an aisle for the bride. We notified all the vendors of the venue change, arranged new site visits, amended rental orders, floral orders and linen orders.
While Irene didn’t actually arrive at this Charleston wedding, the storm the day before was strong enough that the rental company would not have put up the tent, which would have meant there we would have been 4 hours behind on the setup. There would not have been a reception at all so it was worth it all. The couple is now happily married.
“I’ve had the pleasure to work with Tanis on several occasions and every event has been spectacular!!! She takes care of every detail of the event, fulfilling the bride’s every dream. One event that I’ll always remember is when an approaching hurricane threatened the Lowcountry, and there was the possibility that the bride’s venue would be inaccessible if the hurricane continued on its current path. Not willing to take a chance on the bride’s venue, Tanis opened up her own home to host the ceremony and reception. This is dedication; not just to her job, but to the bride and groom.”
